Examples of natural mummy types include the Neolithic Iceman Ötzi, Medieval mummies (see the “Barfüssermummy in the mummy capsule), some South American mummies (see also capsule), ancient Iranian salt mummies and bog bodies.

Artificial mummy types include besides ancient Egyptian mummies, modern ones such as of the dead Lenin (1870-1924), or plastination mummies and cryopreserved bodies by freezing in liquid nitrogen.
